Urbach is moving forward: Safe pedestrian traffic for all generations!

Urbach is the only municipality in the Rems-Murr district that is taking part in this year's 2025 foot traffic check by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport. With around 9,300 residents, the community is considered pedestrian-friendly as almost everything is within walking distance. Mayor Martina Fehrlen received the certificate of participation in an official meeting with State Secretary for Transport Elke Zimmer.

The pedestrian traffic check aims to expand the community's existing mobility concept and make the sidewalks even safer and more comfortable. In particular, parents with strollers and people with walkers should benefit from the improvements. The initiative promotes mobility for all generations and increases awareness of important issues such as accessibility and safety in pedestrian traffic.

Workshops and inspections to improve the situation

As part of the check, two workshops and two inspections will take place. These are intended to develop concrete improvements and offer citizens the opportunity to actively voice their concerns. The first workshop serves to raise awareness and plan the further process, while the inspections serve to analyze the existing situation on site. The second workshop will discuss the collected results.

The motto of the checks is “clear sidewalks,” which underlines how important it is to make pedestrian traffic in Baden-Württemberg more attractive. The sidewalks should not only be barrier-free, but also provide enough space to ensure safe use for everyone. This year, a total of 15 municipalities in Baden-Württemberg were selected for the foot traffic check, including Urbach. Since 2015, 120 cities and municipalities have taken part in this program, which underlines the relevance of the check.

Baden-Württemberg as a pioneer in promoting pedestrian traffic

The 15 municipalities were selected by an expert jury made up of representatives from the Association of Municipalities and Cities, the ADAC, the VCD, the NVBW and the Ministry of Transport. Communities such as Badenweiler, Balingen and Ulm are also among the participants. The size of the municipalities varies considerably, so the program is important for both smaller municipalities and larger cities.

The state covers the costs for the participating municipalities, which makes it easier to implement the project. Baden-Württemberg plays a pioneering role in promoting pedestrian traffic and sets nationwide standards to make sidewalks safer and more accessible. This was confirmed by the Baden-Württemberg state government in a press release, which emphasizes the importance of foot traffic checks for mobility in the communities.
