Tempo 30 in Remshalden: Citizens protest against traffic decisions!
In the municipality of Remshalden, the introduction of a 30 km/h speed limit on several town thoroughfares is at the center of the discussion. On June 2, 2025, it was announced that this regulation was being sought particularly for the affected routes in Grunbach, Geradstetten and Rohrbronn due to noise and traffic safety aspects. This is part of the noise action plan as well as measures for confusing zebra crossing situations in Rohrbronn. Despite these official plans, there are considerable concerns and resistance, particularly from the local council and the CDU parliamentary group, who consider the decision to be against the will of the majority of the population. CDU parliamentary group spokesman Felix Wiesner was critical and raised the question of whether the decision was really in line with the needs of the citizens.
Citizen participation on the topic was initiated in advance. It began on March 5th and ends on April 15th, 2025. Remshalden residents have the opportunity to express their opinions and suggestions via the e-citizen portal www.e-buerger.remshalden.de to express. The background to this measure is a concern of the BWV Remshalden, which wants to take citizens' opinions seriously and include them in decision-making. Historically, the topic of speed limits was already discussed in the municipality's technical committee on November 17, 2014, where the need for speed adjustments on main roads was discussed and a corresponding application to the Stuttgart regional council was discussed.
Arguments for and against 30 km/h speed limit
In the debate about the introduction of speed limit 30, there are arguments both for and against. Proponents argue that reducing speeds could increase the attractiveness of town centers and improve the quality of life through reduced noise pollution. In addition, the aim is to improve traffic safety by reducing speed, although excessive speed has not been identified as the main cause of traffic accidents.
Opponents of the 30 km/h speed limit, on the other hand, argue that many drivers hardly ever travel faster than 30 km/h and that at least two additional traffic signs per intersection would be necessary to communicate the new regulation. Current discussions show that citizens' opinions are crucial in this matter and that a balanced solution must be found.
Affected areas and future steps
The affected road sections in Remshalden are clearly defined: In Grunbach the investigation extends from the junction of Wiesenstraße to Hagenlocher Elektrotechnik, in Geradstetten from the junction of Gaisgasse to the junction of Hirschgasse and in Hebsack from the junction of Remsstraße to Alte Kelter. Citizens are also invited to submit further suggestions for reducing speed, which will enable them to actively participate in shaping traffic policy in Remshalden.
Given the intensive discussions, it will be interesting to see how local decision-makers react to the results of the citizen survey and what long-term solutions are found in terms of traffic safety and quality of life in the community.
