Mill Day in the Swabian Forest: Historic mills to marvel at!
On Whit Monday, June 9, 2025, the 24th German Mill Day will be celebrated in the Swabian Forest. This event, known throughout the federal government, offers visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of mills and trace historical craft practices as well as earlier ways of life and production conditions. Of the nineteen participating mills in the Rems-Murr district, the region is particularly proud of its high mill density.
A total of 13 mills open their doors on Mill Day, including the Meuschenmühle, the Menzlesmühle, the Brandhofermühle and the Glattenzainbachmühle. The event will be ceremoniously opened in the morning in the ecologically outstanding Michelau oil mill. Hubert Kaufmann, mayor, and Dr. Sigel, the district administrator, will give the opening speech at 11 a.m., after a “church in the countryside” will be held at several mills at 10 a.m.
Supporting program and activities
The event program is varied. Wolfgang Grabe, an experienced nature park guide, offers guided tours of the Meuschenmühle. Children can carve wood or work with a branding tool at the Heinlesmühle. The Brandhofer Ölmühle demonstrates how oil is extracted from legumes, while the Voggenberg and Rümelinsmühle demonstrate how flour is made. In addition, oil production will be demonstrated at the Michelau oil mill with a fully functional model.
Family-friendly offers await visitors at many locations. The children's book author Christl Schlag will read from her book “Melchior the Museum Mouse” at the Mühlen kiosk at 2 and 3 p.m. The new Swabian Forest Fairy, Sara Zaiss, is available for further information. When it comes to catering, food and drink are also offered at all mills.
Special attractions and transportation options
The Welzheim Museum is also participating with a special exhibition entitled “The mill rattles in the Swabian Forest”, which opened on Whit Sunday. Visitors can visit the exhibition free of charge until June 15; the museum is open on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
It should be noted that the Swabian Forest Railway is out of service due to flood damage. The forest bus is therefore an important means of transport for hikers and cyclists. Further information about travel options is available on the Schwäbische Waldbahn and Waldbus websites.
With a full calendar of events and the opportunity to experience the historical heritage of the mills, Mill Day in the Swabian Forest promises to be an unforgettable experience. Around 650 historic mills nationwide open their doors on this day, organized by the German Society for Mill Science and Mill Preservation. Mill Day is therefore not only a local but also a national highlight.
