Severe storm warning for southern Germany: hail and storms are threatening!
The German Weather Service has forecast severe storms for the south of Germany today, June 4, 2025. Regions such as southern Baden-Württemberg, Lower Bavaria and Upper Franconia are particularly affected. Extreme weather events are to be expected here, which pose a high risk of severe weather. According to the forecasts, thunderstorms with hail of up to 5 cm and storm or even severe gusts of up to 100 km/h may occur. Heavy rain is also expected, which can reach up to 40 liters per square meter in a short period of time, causing flooding and other dangers.
In addition, the weather service warns that more extreme weather phenomena are also possible. Large hail with diameters of up to 8 cm and hurricane gusts of up to 130 km/h could occur. Other regions of Germany, including Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Hesse, Thuringia and parts of Saxony, could also experience less severe thunderstorms, but with similar dangers, such as squalls, heavy rain and small-grain hail.
Past storms and their effects
On Saturday evening, June 2, 2025, there were already severe storms in several federal states. In Bavaria, the police had to be deployed more than 40 times to clear fallen trees and secure flooded streets. Rail traffic was significantly affected, leading to route closures and delays, particularly due to objects lying on the tracks. Severe weather warnings were issued with a red warning level in numerous regions, such as between Nördlingen and Ingolstadt, indicating dangers such as lightning and flooding.
There is still a risk of thunderstorms and heavy rain in the following days, especially in Saxony and southern Germany. Rainfall amounts of up to 15 liters per square meter are assumed here. These thunderstorms are often accompanied by hail and wind gusts of around 70 km/h. Severe thunderstorms have already been reported in some parts of the southern Black Forest, leading to numerous calls to deal with flooded cellars and fallen trees in North Rhine-Westphalia.
In Erftstadt the water was up to half a meter high in some areas. A lightning strike in Thuringia led to a roof fire, although fortunately no injuries were reported. Several regional trains also had to be temporarily closed in Rhineland-Palatinate. However, all restrictions on train traffic were lifted on Sunday morning.
The thunderstorm and severe weather warnings are valid until the late afternoon of June 2, 2025 and offer an outlook that the population in the affected regions should be well prepared. Meteorologists and experts advise people to exercise particular caution and take protective measures if necessary.
