Winter warmth for those in need: AWO Backnang knits for emergencies!
The cold months pose a major challenge for many people, especially those living on the streets or at risk of homelessness. The Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO) in Backnang has sent an important signal of solidarity with its Christmas campaign “Hot Needle” and is calling on citizens to support. The aim of the campaign is to collect hand-knitted socks, scarves and hats to provide homeless or homeless people with warmth in the winter cold. This reports Stuttgart News.
The campaign began in November and runs until the end of January 2025. Citizens are called upon to donate wool and their time to knit the required items of clothing themselves. As part of the Christmas campaign, numerous boxes and bags have already been filled in the AWO social station by December 16th, which will then be distributed to various social institutions in Backnang. Pascal Weber, deputy chairman of AWO Backnang, emphasizes the importance of this initiative and hopes for continued support for homeless people. He also reports the increasing demand for warm clothing, especially in the cold months. So far, the first donations have already been made to Haus Friedrichstrasse, which cooperates with the AWO to directly help people in need, as Erlacher Höhe reports on its website.
Actions to support the homeless
As the German Red Cross (DRK) noted, personal strokes of fate are often the trigger for homelessness, and these people urgently need support, especially in the winter months. Last winter, seven homeless people froze to death in Germany, which illustrates the urgency of the offers of help. Throughout the winter, DRK helpers distribute blankets, sleeping bags, clothing and food to central meeting points. More and more people, especially young people, are seeking help, which shows how important initiatives like “Hot Needle” are. The DRK also offers refrigerated buses in many cities, including Stuttgart, to offer homeless people medical assistance, warm drinks and places to sleep.
The AWO encourages all citizens to take part in the campaign and to hand in the collected donations directly to the AWO social station in the AWO house at Aspacher Straße 32 in Backnang. Opening hours are Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is recommended that you call 07191 72461 in advance, especially over the Christmas period as drop-off options are limited.
The AWO Backnang Christmas campaign is more than just a collection of warm clothing; it stands for the strong cohesion in the community. The donated clothing should not only provide physical warmth, but also convey a sign of appreciation and solidarity in times of crisis. The AWO would like to thank all the knitters who support this initiative. At a time when heating costs are skyrocketing and many people are in need, the campaign shows how important each individual is in society.
