Inauguration of the Francis Chapel: Space for faith and community!

The Francis Chapel in the Haus Lindenhof Foundation in Schwäbisch Gmünd-Bettringen will be inaugurated on Sunday, July 6, 2025, as part of a summer festival. The celebratory service begins at 11 a.m. and will be led by Prof. Dr. Sven van Meegen, the deputy dean, celebrated. This chapel is an important step in improving accessibility for people with disabilities, as the previous chapel was a hard-to-reach temporary structure in the administration building.

Simplicity characterizes the design of the new chapel, which was designed by architect Bernd Treide. A central feature is a cross stamped into a clay wall through which natural light streams. This cross of light is intended to attract viewers and invite them to linger in the room.

Space of silence and devotion

The St. Francis Chapel is not just a place of prayer, but includes several important elements. The central areas include an elliptical prayer chapel and a spacious chapel room intended for indoor services. There is also an outdoor area where outdoor church services can be held in the future. This construction will be particularly important for the 75 wheelchair users and people with walking difficulties in order to provide them with barrier-free access.

However, the construction of the chapel, which began a year ago, represents a financial challenge. Donations are still needed to ensure funding. Interested donors can do this via a donation account at Kreissparkasse Ostalb, whereby the IBAN DE62 6145 0050 1000 2748 97 should be specified as “Franziskus Chapel”.

Part of the journey of faith

The chapel is located directly on the Way of St. James and is part of the path of faith number 7: “Paths to Saint Ottilia”. The initiators, the city of Schwäbisch Gmünd and the Ostalb deanery, are pleased that people with disabilities now have a place of faith that serves both their physical needs and their mental well-being. The chapel will also be built in the immediate vicinity of the Michael, Gabriel and Raphael homes and the “Place of Remembrance”, which further underlines its importance as a space of silence and devotion.
