Brenzbahn expansion: Heidenheim and Alb-Donau in a dispute over planning costs!
The dispute over the expansion of the Brenzbahn between the districts of Heidenheim and Alb-Donau is coming to a head. The district administrator of Heidenheim, Peter Polta, has given the Alb-Donau district an ultimatum to participate in the planning costs for the important rail transport route between Ulm and Aalen by June 10th. However, the Alb-Donau district under the leadership of District Administrator Heiner Scheffold let this ultimatum pass, which further strained the already tense relations between the two districts SWR reported.
The state of Baden-Württemberg has drastically increased funding for the expansion of the Brenzbahn in recent months. Those responsible in Heidenheim see this measure as a “historic opportunity”, which will result in an hourly express connection and a half-hourly service between Heidenheim and Aalen. At the same time, the project aims to electrify the railway line, which is seen as crucial for the future of rail transport in the region.
Financial prospects and support
The total costs for expanding the Brenzbahn are estimated at around 594 million euros. Baden-Württemberg is now covering 50% of the costs for planning and electrification, which improves the financial conditions for the project. In addition, the Alb-Donau district has already contributed 118,000 euros to the planning costs, while the district council decided in October to make a solidarity payment of 667,000 euros to advance the process. The planning costs for the expansion total around 32 million euros, of which federal funds amounting to 373 million euros could potentially be used landkreis-heidenheim.de explained.
While the Heidenheim district is optimistic about the future, the Alb-Donau district expresses concerns about the actual benefits of the project. Due to the geographical conditions, the Alb-Donau district sees little transport benefit, as only a short section of the route runs through its area. This leads to accusations of a lack of solidarity towards Heidenheim, as he has not participated in public transport projects in other districts.
Future prospects
Nevertheless, both districts emphasize their willingness to resolve the conflict and find a solution. The Baden-Württemberg Transport Minister Winfried Herrmann gives the all-clear and explains that the Brenzbahn is not at risk even without the full financial participation of the Alb-Donau district. The importance of the project for mobility in the region is undisputed, and the upcoming changes could provide significant impetus for the economic development of the Danube-Iller region.
In view of the enormous costs totaling over 1.2 billion euros for the expansion of the Brenzbahn and the Lake Constance Belt Railway, the role of the various sources of financing will continue to be crucial. The state plans to cover the entire cost of electrification if it is not already covered by federal funds. The coming months will show whether and how the disputes between the districts can be resolved and whether the expansion of the Brenzbahn can progress as planned.
