Deadly drone attack in Kharkiv: children among the injured!
On the night of June 11, 2025, another Russian drone attack occurred on Kharkiv, killing at least two people and injuring dozens more. According to the city's mayor, Ihor Terekhov, five children were among the 37 injured. The attack caused significant damage to homes and sparked a major fire in the area. Corporate buildings were also badly affected by the attack, as the Ukrainian news portal RBK-Ukraine reported. Kharkiv, which lies near the border with Russia, is a frequent target of such attacks, part of a more than three-year war waged by Russia against Ukraine. These attacks not only cause human suffering but also destroy important infrastructure.
The latest attack in Kharkiv follows one of the most devastating attacks since the start of the war, which took place just days earlier and also claimed numerous casualties. While the situation on the ground remains tense, Russia is intensifying its airstrikes on various cities in Ukraine, including Kiev, Dnipro, Chernihiv and Odessa. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported in a recent report that 315 drones and seven missiles were used in recent strike operations, of which the Ukrainian Air Force intercepted 284 drones and all missiles.
International reactions
The escalation of attacks has also provoked international reactions. Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned the Russian attacks as “the most serious war crimes” and described them as targeted terror against the civilian population. In this context, President Zelensky has once again called for the price cap for Russian oil to be halved to $30 per barrel in order to put Russia under economic pressure and encourage a negotiated solution. Currently, that cap is $60, but Zelensky emphasizes that only a significant reduction can have a serious impact on Russia's behavior.
Zelensky thanked the EU Commission for its focus on the energy and banking sectors in the planned new sanctions against Russia. However, he was critical of ongoing compromise negotiations, which, in his opinion, could delay peace. The ongoing airstrikes, particularly the heavy attacks on Kiev, demonstrate the urgency of international intervention and the need to achieve sustainable peace in Ukraine.
Amid this tense situation, the humanitarian situation in the areas affected by the attacks remains critical. It is essential that the international community work together to assist the victims of this aggression and pursue lasting peace.
