Half-timbered day in the Rems-Murr district: Discover our historical treasures!
On Sunday, May 25th, the 11th German Half-timbered Day will be celebrated in Germany, with three municipalities in the Rems-Murr district - Schorndorf, Backnang and Waiblingen - taking on a central role. These cities host a series of tours, specialist lectures and workshops to emphasize the importance of timber framing. According to the Stuttgarter Nachrichten, more than 100,000 half-timbered houses can be found in the member cities of the German Half-timbered Road in the Rems-Murr district, an impressive indication of the cultural wealth of this region.
The motto of the day “Preserving tradition, shaping the future” makes it clear that preserving these historic buildings is not just a nostalgic matter, but also belongs in the context of climate protection and sustainability. This is particularly supported by the approach of making citizens and guests more aware of the half-timbered stock in the member cities, as is also described on the German Fachwerkstätten website.
Program of events
In Schorndorf, the birthplace of the famous inventor Gottlieb Daimler, who grew up in a half-timbered house, the celebrations will also reflect the fascination for these architectural masterpieces. Backnang offers a 90-minute guided tour on Sunday afternoon, starting at 3 p.m. at the Stiftshof. Participation costs five euros and those interested can register by email at tourismus@backnang.de or by telephone at 0 71 91 / 89 43 61.
In Waiblingen, several architectural tours take place in the House of City History, with topics ranging from raft eyes to the carving of Giovanni's name. These tours start at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. and spontaneous participants are welcome. Further tours in Waiblingen, which have the motto “Funny fellows”, start at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and focus on the “envious heads” on half-timbered buildings.
The finest hour of the half-timbered structure
The events of the German Half-Work Day 2025 are part of a long-standing tradition that has been very well attended in recent years. This shows how important local communities are in preserving their historically valuable buildings. The local press has already reported widely on the upcoming events, and on the Fachwerkfreunde platform you can also find a lot of information about the importance of half-timbered buildings in Germany.
The Open Umgebindehäuser Day promotes an even more intensive connection between citizens and their cultural heritage. Half-timbered buildings are not only considered a cultural asset worthy of protection, but also an essential component of a lively and sustainable urban development that truly reflects the history of the regions.
For anyone interested, May 25th will be an excellent opportunity to get to know the facets of the half-timbered structure better and to take an active part in preserving this heritage. There is great anticipation for the events, not least because of the variety of program items that highlight both local traditions and modern approaches.
