Kornwestheim secures runner-up – chess fans shine!

The Schachfreunde 59 Kornwestheim achieved a decisive victory on the last matchday of the state league. With a hard-fought 4.5:3.5 against the team from Tamm, they secured the runner-up spot. This placement behind the champions Ludwigsburg represents a great success for the club, even if the second team is relegated from the state league after a year and will play in the district league next season. However, Kornwestheim can look forward to further successes in the club structure.

In the district class, Kornwestheim IV took second place after the eighth matchday and thus showed a strong performance. Kornwestheim V, on the other hand, ended the season in the B class with a 3-3 draw against Erdmannhausen II and ended up in fourth place. These results demonstrate the club's stable development in various leagues.

Sporting highlights of the runner-up

Kornwestheim's first team had to rely on the support of three substitutes from the second team during the decisive game. Thomas Riedel fought for a draw, but Joshua Lüdke was lost in the final. Armin Winkler equalized, but Till Steinmeyer lost again and Tamm was in the lead again. Thomas Bantel was able to equalize to 2.5:2.5, before Julian Maisch took the lead with his win to take Kornwestheim to 3.5:2.5. Nils Afonso and Markiyan Bodriyenko also kept their games drawn, resulting in the final score of 4.5:3.5.

The draw between Heilbronn III and Schwaigern, which secured Kornwestheim the runner-up title, was also crucial for reaching second place. While Ludwigsburg became champions, Ingersheim only played with six players, which further influenced the table situation. Kornwestheim III, however, suffered a surprising defeat against Besigheim II and fell back to third place.

Commitment to child protection

In addition to its sporting successes, the club is also committed to the well-being of children and young people. The Schachfreunde 59 have received the “Child Protection Quality Feature” from the Ludwigsburg district, which is a sign of their commitment to child protection. This recognition, signed by District Administrator Dietmar Allgaier, is intended to motivate us to anchor child protection in the association and includes obligations to treat the personalities of children and young people with respect. The provisions also include an active stand against violence, discrimination, racism and sexism.

The issue of child protection is also becoming increasingly important in the German Chess Federation. According to a report, recent seminars on this topic have experienced high demand and were quickly booked up. The DSB is planning to introduce basic child protection training, which is aimed particularly at coaches and officials and is intended to raise awareness of the well-being of children in sport. A need for this was clearly identified, particularly given the power imbalance in sports clubs.

Overall, the development of Schachfreunde 59 Kornwestheim shows that club success and social responsibility can go hand in hand. The coming season will not only bring with it the challenge in the district league for the second team, but also the opportunity to further expand the commitment to child protection.
