Kornwestheim Cougars before the decisive derby: fight to stay in the league!
Next Saturday the Kornwestheim Cougars will meet the Ludwigsburg Bulldogs in the Oberliga duel. The game kicks off at 3 p.m. in the Ludwig Jahn Stadium in Ludwigsburg. There is a lot at stake for the Cougars: The team urgently needs to collect points to ensure they stay in the league. Coach Andreas Geibel, who describes the team as a “learning organization,” emphasizes that every player must give their best to achieve victory. The Cougars also have a positive record against the Bulldogs, having won five of six meetings against their rivals over the past five years.
The first leg on April 26th ended with a narrow 45:35 win for the Cougars. Nevertheless, the current situation for the team is tense. They suffered defeat in their last three games, including a home defeat against the Stuttgart Scorpions. Injuries in particular, especially those to starting quarterback Carlos Verduzco, have hit the team hard. The coaching team not only strives to support the players athletically, but also educationally and psychologically during this challenging phase.
The path to staying in the league
The Cougars' main goal this season is to avoid a relegation spot so they don't have to compete against the runner-up in the national league. Another incentive for the team is the opportunity to win the “County Championship” as county winner. Despite the challenges, the Cougars are optimistic and expect strong support from their fans in the Jahnstadion.
The SV Kornwestheim football department, to which the Cougars belong, has been active in the Ludwigsburg district and Stuttgart area for 20 years. During this time the team has developed a respected name for itself. In addition to American football, cheerleading is also offered. The “Wildcats” and “Candycats” cheerleading teams cheer on the players on game days and contribute to the stadium atmosphere.
American football requires full physical effort, discipline, tactical thinking and team spirit. In 25 years, the SVK Cougars have earned a permanent place in the sports scene not only in Ludwigsburg, but also in Bietigheim and Stuttgart. Andreas Geibel is head of the football team, while Jasmin Mühlenbeck is responsible for the cheerleaders. The club has over 7,000 members, making it one of the largest sports clubs in Baden-Württemberg.
For those interested, there is information about training times, trial training sessions and training locations on the SV Kornwestheim website. In addition, donations to the Cougars department can be stated on a transfer slip using the reference “Donation SVK Cougars”. The donation account set up for this is: Volksbank Zuffenhausen, IBAN DE25 6009 0300 0446 8660 24, BIC GENO DES1 ZUF.
It remains to be seen whether the Cougars can turn things around on Saturday to stay in the big leagues and offer their fans an exciting game. However, this is not the first time this season that the signs point to challenge and effort.
