Burglary crime in Germany
The incidents in Leonberg are part of a worrying development in Germany, where residential burglaries have increased since the corona pandemic. In 2023, around 119,000 thefts from apartments were recorded, including around 77,800 cases of burglary, which represents an increase. This must be seen in the context of the highest level since 2019, which is still over 50% lower than the 2015 figure of around 167,000 cases. The Statista provides further insight by pointing to the urban states that have the highest risk of burglaries, such as Bremen, Berlin and Hamburg, while the risk is lowest in Bavaria.
The clearance rate for residential burglaries was just 14.9% in 2023, which is the lowest value in years. In comparison to the overall clearance rate for all crimes of 58.4%, the picture of burglary crime is alarming. The police identified around 9,890 suspects in 2023, which represents an increase compared to the previous year. What is particularly striking is the high proportion of foreigners in residential burglaries that have been solved, reaching 42.9%, which is considered the highest level.
