New building in Gerlingen: 31 households have to make way for 124 new apartments!

In Gerlingen, between Kupferstrasse and Hofwiesenstrasse, an extensive new building project has begun that will bring significant changes to the cityscape. How Stuttgart News reported, 31 households had to be relocated for this modern construction project. The first old buildings were demolished in the summer of 2025 to make room for new forms of housing.

The building plot covers around 1.5 hectares and extends over an area that initially contained four building series with a total of 88 residential units. Of these, the Stuttgart Building and Housing Association (BWV) owned three series, while the remaining series belonged to the state building cooperative of the tax officials.

New building plans and progress

The plans now stipulate that a total of eight buildings will be built, which will accommodate 124 apartments and a neighborhood meeting place. Future residents can look forward to underground parking spaces. The entire project is expected to create around 9,400 square meters of new living space, with the demolition material being recycled on site.

After the first construction phase, the house at Schillerstrasse 50-54 is expected to be demolished, probably from autumn 2027. An inventory analysis showed that the existing buildings, which date from the 1960s, are not worth preserving. The BWV actively supports the affected tenants in finding an apartment and moving and offers the existing tenants the opportunity to register for an apartment in the new area.

Time frame and future apartments

The shell construction work is planned for the end of January 2026, while the first six residential buildings with 96 apartments should be ready for occupancy in autumn 2027. Two residential buildings with a total of 28 apartments are planned for the second construction phase, the completion of which is targeted for 2029. The new apartments will include two to four-room apartments with balconies or terraces and are easily accessible by elevator. In addition, the social housing share of the planned residential units is around 30 percent.
