Together for BUGA 2043: Stuttgart, Ludwigsburg and Esslingen are pitching in!
The cities of Stuttgart, Ludwigsburg and Esslingen have taken the first step towards a joint application for the 2043 Federal Garden Show along the Neckar. A comprehensive feasibility study will examine the urban development and ecological potential of this major project in order to promote sustainable development in the region. On July 3, 2025, the Stuttgart municipal council released 66,000 euros to carry out the study from a total budget of a maximum of 262,990 euros, as stated ludwigsburg24.com reported.
The planned study will not only assess the quality of life and biodiversity in the region, but also focus on the aspects of local recreation and water management. The attractiveness of the location and the recruitment of skilled workers are also discussed. The results of the analysis should serve as a decision-making basis for the cities and the Stuttgart Region Association (VRS) to clarify whether an application for BUGA 2043 or possibly even for an earlier exhibition should be considered. In addition, the study highlights spatial, financial and organizational challenges that need to be overcome, as the Stuttgart city portal emphasizes: stuttgart.de.
Sustainability in focus
A central goal of the initiative is to promote sustainable urban and regional development along the Neckar. The example projects should be planned according to the principles of a multifunctional “blue-green infrastructure” that integrate natural areas. The interlinking of the city, open space and water infrastructure also plays an important role here. The future topics of BUGA will particularly include climate adaptation and biodiversity.
Another aspect of the feasibility study is the active involvement of citizens in the development process. This is intended to ensure that the long-term interests of the population are taken into account and that the revitalization of the urban-industrial area along the Neckar is reinterpreted. The report also provides a focused analysis that provides thorough recommendations for a possible implementation of the Federal Garden Show in approximately two decades.
By carrying out the feasibility study, the three cities involved hope to take a significant step towards a more harmonious and sustainable future for the region - and an important impetus for the quality of life of their citizens.
