Large wind farm in Hemmingen: Almost 3,400 households benefit!

Four wind turbines are soon to be built in Strohgäu, north of Hemmingen in the Ludwigsburg district. The project, which is being developed by Uhl Windkraft from Ellwangen, is a promising step towards renewable energy in the region. There is currently only one active wind turbine in the entire Ludwigsburg district, which was put into operation in Ingersheim in 2012, which further increases the importance of this new wind farm.

The planned wind turbines are expected to reach a hub height of 179 meters and generate a total output of 27.2 megawatts. Each wind turbine is expected to produce between 12 and 13 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually, equivalent to the energy needs of approximately 3,400 households. The mayor of Hemmingen and the local councilors have signaled their support for the project, but with reference to the need for nature conservation.

Details about the wind farm and permits

The priority area designated for the wind farm (LB-08) was reduced from the original 145 hectares to 100 hectares, with the areas mainly concentrated in the direction of Schwieberdingen. Approval for the wind farm should be applied for by mid-2025, with possible commissioning by mid-2028. The foundations of the wind turbines are dimensioned with a diameter of almost 30 meters and a depth of 3.75 meters.

In order to accommodate the agricultural land owners, usage contracts were concluded with Uhl Windkraft as part of an area leasing model. This could help increase acceptance among residents.

Criticism and environmental protection

Despite the positive aspects, there are also critical voices about the project. The location of the wind turbines is near a resting area for rare migratory birds, which unsettles nature conservation organizations and residents. There are also fears that the wind turbines will be built in close proximity to garden houses, which does not comply with the legal minimum distance of 800 meters. A volume of around 40 decibels is planned for these systems, which is comparable to a quiet conversation.

The regional plan for wind turbines will be laid out until July 7, 2025 and covers 87 priority areas nationwide. The country is legally obliged to designate 1.8 percent of the country's area for wind power in order to promote the expansion of renewable energies. The importance of this new wind farm project becomes clear not only locally, but also as part of the nationwide energy transition.
