New fire station in Ditzingen: construction in sight, but financial hurdles!

A new equipment house is being planned in Ditzingen for the Heimerdingen department of the volunteer fire department, which will also be used by the German Red Cross (DRK). The local council approved the draft development plan at a meeting. The location, between a dirt road, agricultural land and a food market, was chosen to meet the needs of the fire department and the DRK local association. The decision to build this urgently needed house was made at the end of 2023. The need for new rooms is evident, as both the fire department and the DRK association want to expand their commitment, including the accommodation of a youth fire department, which should have its own youth room.

The estimated construction costs amount to around 9.9 million euros. However, there are financial hurdles as revenue, particularly from trade tax, falls short of expectations. As a result, many construction projects and non-essential renovations in the region have currently been stopped, making the realization of the fire station even more difficult. Nevertheless, the construction appears to be an important investment in the future of the community and its security infrastructure.

History of the Heimerdingen fire department

The Heimerdingen volunteer fire department has a long history, the origins of which are believed to be in the second half of the 19th century, probably around 1860. However, the exact year it was founded is not known. In 1863, the fire department was equipped with a hand-held pressure sprayer, which is still in use today and represents a valuable part of fire department history. After the Second World War, the volunteer fire department was re-established. A significant update to the equipment took place in 1958 when an LF 8 TS fire engine was purchased to meet growing requirements.

The incorporation into Ditzingen meant that the Heimerdingen fire department lost its independence. Today, as an independent department, it is part of the Ditzingen Volunteer Fire Department and has faced the challenges of modern firefighting and the DRK's support operations. This long tradition and the commitment of the firefighters show how important this institution is to the community and underscores the urgent need for a new fire station.
