In overwhelming heat, numerous spectators gathered in the Aalen Centus Arena to watch the eagerly awaited game between the Pforzheim Wilddogs and the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns on June 16, 2025. In a dramatic final, the Wilddogs prevailed 41:34 after extra time and thus maintained their top spot in the GFL South. Right from the start of the game, the importance of breast cancer prevention was highlighted, organized in cooperation with the Pink Ribbon Foundation.
The game began with a coin toss, which the Wilddogs won. They chose the right to attack for the second half. However, the Unicorns' first drive was stopped by the Wilddogs defense, and Alec Tatum scored the first touchdown for the Wilddogs to make it 0-7. As a result, the Unicorns were able to equalize and ultimately take the lead with 13:7. The Wilddogs encountered adversity in the first half, losing the ball a total of four times, resulting in a 20-13 halftime deficit.
Drama in the second half
The second half started with another turnover for the Wilddogs and the Unicorns quickly increased the lead to 27:13. But the Wilddogs didn't give up, they first reduced the lead to 27:19 and then made it 27:21 with a two-point conversion. Luca Hirschberger scored a field goal and brought the Wilddogs back into the game 27:24. After the Unicorns scored another point (34:24), the Wilddogs equalized to 34:34 in the final minutes and forced the game into overtime.
A crucial moment was Hirschberger's blocked field goal that led to overtime. The Wilddogs were finally able to score a touchdown, which secured the final score of 41:34. The turnover during overtime happened due to a fumble by the Unicorns, and head coach Michael Lang praised the performance of his defense after the game, which was able to make crucial stops.
An event with heart
The game was not only important sportingly, but also socially. Around 60 cheerleaders contributed to the atmosphere of the game with impressive choreography. Despite the high temperatures and the spectators present, who often sought shade, the atmosphere was exuberant. The Wilddogs now remain at the top of the GFL South with a score of 4-1 and will face the Munich Cowboys next Saturday.
However, the injury situation for the Wilddogs remains tense. Players like Tobias Pai, Theo Michel and Dre Harris were not able to convince with their best form. The coming games will show how the team, strengthened by this victory, can continue to assert itself.
