New wood heating plant in Schwäbisch Hall: Clean energy from the region!

On May 21, 2025, the Schwäbisch Hall public utility company ceremoniously inaugurated its new wood-fired heating plant in the Solpark commercial area in Hessental. Representatives from the twin city of Karesi in Turkey also took part in this important event. The new biomass plant, which represents an investment of around 6.3 million euros, is viewed as part of the municipal utility's exit strategy to transform heat generation to 100% renewable energy sources, as Energie und Management reports.

The heating plant uses wood as fuel in the municipal utility's heating network. The system will run in trial operation until the end of May before being shut down during the summer. Regular operation should then begin with the coming heating season. The wood chip boiler with a thermal output of 5,000 kilowatts helps the municipal utility to cover around 10% of the heat requirements in the network and is expected to enable annual CO2 savings of around 4,000 tonnes compared to natural gas heating.

Details about the biomass plant

The biomass plant covers a 2,500 square meter site and has a wood chip storage facility that offers space for around 4,500 cubic meters of fuel. The wood chips come exclusively from the region and include forest residues and landscape maintenance materials. The planned operating time is around 4,000 hours per year, and a total heat supply of 20,000 MWh is expected.

Another advantage of this system is the cooperation with the Schwäbisch Hall district, which ensures a reliable fuel supply. This initiative highlights the importance of biomass as a renewable energy source that not only contributes to CO2 reduction but also supports local economies and the environment.

Why biomass?

The use of biomass as an energy source, as explained by Planet Wissen, uses stored solar energy from plants and plant residues. This sustainable form of energy stands in contrast to fossil fuels and offers numerous advantages such as promoting rural development and additional income opportunities for farmers.

However, the increasing demand for biomass also brings challenges. The use of land for energy crops can compete with food cultivation. In addition, modern technologies and filter techniques must be used to minimize emissions. These aspects highlight the need for balanced and sustainable planning to make the most of the benefits of biomass without risking negative impacts on the environment.

Overall, Stadtwerke Schwäbisch Hall and its new wood-fired heating plant are well on the way to making a significant contribution to the energy transition in Germany and meeting the requirements for a sustainable energy supply.
