Refreshing Shakespeare highlight: What You Want” re-staged!

On June 27, 2025, the Badische Landesbühne celebrated an impressive production of William Shakespeare's “What You Want”. Directed by Jürgen Lingmann, a modernized version of the classic was presented, which was reinterpreted by Gabriella Bußacker and Jan Bosse. The play's plot spins a web of love confusions that extend across different levels of society.

The ensemble, consisting of talented actors, impressed with their enthusiasm for acting and their skilful integration of comic elements. A highlight of the performance was the portrayal of Sir Toby, played by Evelyn Nagel, as well as the role of the knight Andreas von Bleichenwang, which Cornelia Heilmann took on. She showed her comedic talent and remarkable agility.

The quartet of schemers and the tragic figure Malvolio

Another impressive duo was Madeline Hartig as the fool and Martin Behlert as chambermaid Maria, who acted as part of the scheming quartet. Particularly noteworthy is Frank Siebers in the role of Malvolio, who captivated the audience as a tragically suffering figure. Countess Olivia, played by Nadine Pape, decided to forego love after her brother's death, while Duke Orsino, played by Lukas Maria Redemann, appeared as a lovesick man. At the heart of the piece is Viola, embodied by Laura Brettschneider, who poses as a boy in order to act as a messenger of love.

At the end of the play, the love chaos is resolved - everyone gets what they desire, except for Malvolio, who is still left behind. Viola's twin brother, Sebastian, played by Thilo Langer, also appears again and provides additional tension.

An entertaining theatrical experience

The performance does not offer a classic Shakespeare experience, but shines with its entertaining production, which provided many laughs and a real theatrical pleasure. Especially at the end of the Badische Landesbühne's anniversary season, there was great anticipation for the upcoming 2025/26 season. The program booklets for the next season are already available and promise further exciting productions.
