Fantastic swimming lakes in BW: Where swimming is really safe!

As part of the current assessments by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Health, the water quality of the bathing lakes is extremely positive. According to the latest information, 97% of the 311 regular bathing spots in the state are rated as either “very good” or “good” for a refreshing swim. Health Minister Manne Lucha emphasized this in Stuttgart when presenting the new bathing water map on May 26th. The water quality of the lakes is above average compared to Europe, and the bathing water map is available online as an interactive map to provide bathers with up-to-date information.

Although the majority of bathing lakes have excellent water properties, there are also some exceptions. Two bathing lakes, the Sunthauser See in Bad Dürrheim and the Metzisweiler Weiher in Bad Wurzach, are not recommended for swimming due to increased microbiological contamination. The Sunthauser See has been closed since 2021, while swimming in the Metzisweiler Weiher is currently not recommended. In addition, four bathing areas only have “sufficient quality”, which must also be taken into account.

Bathing areas with sufficient water quality

  • Badesee Buch in Rainau
  • Stausee in Mulfingen
  • Badesee Hermuthausen in Ingelfingen
  • Baggersee Eggenstein in Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen

The hygienic control of the bathing lakes is carried out at least once a month by the health authorities during the bathing season, which in Baden-Württemberg lasts from June 1st to September 15th. During inspections, they take water samples to check the bacterial load and the overall hygienic situation of the bathing areas. However, during extreme weather events, such as heavy rain, germs or pollutants can be introduced, which is why regional information and bathing warnings at bathing lakes should always be observed.

In addition to water quality monitoring, the ministry advises against swimming in rivers as they are often not officially controlled. The authorities' recommendations are an important aspect to ensure the safety and health of bathers. Further information on water quality is available here Sozialministerium.baden-wuerttemberg.de or available from local health departments.

The positive development of water quality shows that Baden-Württemberg is well on the way to making the bathing season safe and pleasant for all leisure pool enthusiasts. However, it is still important to follow the instructions and warnings in order to enjoy carefree hours by the water.
