Lightning strike causes barn in Öhringen to burn down completely!
On the night of Monday, June 2, 2025, there was a devastating fire in Öhringen that completely destroyed a barn in the city center. The fire was reported around 1 a.m. and police suspect a lightning strike during a thunderstorm was the cause of the fire. This was confirmed by the officials of both tagesschau.de as well as from schwaebische.de confirmed.
The fire brigade, which was on site with around 100 emergency services, was finally able to extinguish the fire around 9 a.m. by morning. However, due to the narrow development in the city center, the operation was particularly challenging. When the fire brigade arrived, the barn was already fully engulfed in flames. A resident reported a sudden noise before the flames engulfed the building. While the fire was being extinguished, the barn collapsed completely.
Consequences of the fire
The barn belonged to a craft business and served as a storage area for various technical equipment. There were also two cars inside that were completely destroyed by the flames. A truck and a trailer parked in front of the barn were also almost completely burned out. The estimated total damage is around 200,000 euros. Despite the enormous destruction, no injuries were reported.
Another critical point was a damaged oil tank at the rear of the building. In order to prevent possible oil contamination of the nearby Ohrn River, the fire department set up an oil barrier. Here too, the police confirmed the necessary measures to avert an environmental threat. The investigation into the exact cause of the fire is still ongoing, according to tagesschau.de reported.
