Happy vineyard: premiere with dance, dreams and confusion!
The Pumpkin cultural initiative is bringing an important work of German theater to the stage with a performance of “The Happy Vineyard”. The premiere will take place on Friday, July 4th, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. in the Schlosstenne Burgstall in Wies. Directed by Karl Posch, the piece is presented by Carl Zuckmayer and impresses with its lively and emotional text. The production is based on modern times and places the action in a context that includes current allusions and local color. The twelve actors communicate primarily in colloquial language, which contributes to the authenticity of the characters.
“The Merry Vineyard,” which premiered in Berlin in 1925, is considered Zuckmayer’s literary breakthrough. The comedy takes place in a fictional winegrowing village in Rhine-Hesse and focuses on the milieu of winegrowers, wine merchants, boatmen and lower middle class people. Although the play was criticized and rejected in its time, it quickly became the most performed play of the 1920s. Zuckmayer received the Kleist Prize for his work and wrote numerous songs himself that are woven into the plot. This mixture of social criticism and humor makes the work still relevant today.
Plot and characters
The focus of the story is Gunderloch, played by Dominikus Plaschg, who plans to sell half of his winery. The prospective buyers are a diverse ensemble, including the wine merchant Vogelsbergerin (Elisabeth Thomann) and the sommelier Hahnesand (Karl Veroneg). However, Gunderloch also has his daughter Klarchen (Laura Thomann) in mind, whose engagement to the academic Knuzius (Simon Enzi) is on the condition that he is capable of conceiving. However, klarchen herself has feelings for the craftsman Jochen Most (Michael Prattes), which leads to a series of misunderstandings and confusions.
The night before the planned winery sale is spent celebrating, singing and fighting and ends with the emergence of four bridal couples, which reflects the chaotic but also happy solidarity of the villagers. Other characters in the production include Johanna Wabnegg as Babettchen, Gudrun Lukas as Annemarie and Gerhild Veroneg as Frau Rindsfuß.
