Schlierbach Agricultural Technical School: Fit for the future with record numbers!
The Schlierbach Agricultural Technical School is ideally prepared for the future. Founded in 1920 in the monastery, the institution moved to its current location in 1982. Comprehensive renovations have been carried out since 2021 to meet the modern requirements of agricultural training. What is particularly noteworthy is that the school recorded the highest number of students in its history in the 2023 school year. For the coming school year 2024/25, 225 young people are enrolled in the three-year technical school.
In addition, 50 adults in the evening school branches for agriculture and forestry expand the educational offerings. The constantly growing demand is also evidenced by the full capacity of the boarding school with 116 beds. The technical school not only offers modern classrooms, but also comprehensive practical areas that are essential for training.
Modern infrastructure and diverse offerings
The infrastructure of the technical school has been significantly improved. New rooms for milk and meat processing, a teaching kitchen and various workshops are now available in the Stiftsmeierhof. This also includes workshops for wood, metal and agricultural technology, an electrical laboratory, beekeeping, fruit processing and hunting training. Many projects to improve training conditions were realized through our own efforts in collaboration with the graduate association.
A particularly interesting development is the creation of a converted liquid manure storage facility, in which a garage and a warehouse each with an area of 200 m² were created. The school is also committed to progress in terms of energy supply: a photovoltaic system with over 200 kWp supplies the school buildings and workshops with environmentally friendly electricity. These innovations show how much the technical school is in line with current ecological challenges.
Training opportunities in agriculture
While the Schlierbach technical school is flourishing, the entire industry is recording a decline in trainees. According to a report from the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE), the total number of trainees in agriculture, forestry and fishing fell by 633 in 2023 compared to the previous year to a total of 32,322. A look at the most popular training occupations shows certain changes: While the number of agricultural trainees increased by 354 to 9,084, the gardening profession showed a significant decline from 747 to 13,080 participants.
Around a quarter of trainees in these areas are female. However, the proportion varies considerably between different professions. For gardeners and farmers it is around 22%. In contrast, in rural home economics, 100% of trainees are women. This information illustrates how important it is to further promote training in agriculture and make it attractive in order to counteract current trends.
For further information about the development of trainee numbers, detailed statistics can be found at www.bmel-statistics.de/bildung can be viewed. However, as an educational institution in the region, the Schlierbach Agricultural Technical School remains a beacon for the future development of agriculture.
