SCANDALOUS WALK: 750 years of Salach and the shadows of history!

In a breathtaking spectacle of history, the community of Salach experienced an unforgettable local walk last Friday that celebrated the community's 750th anniversary! Organized by the SPD Salach, this historical tour attracted over 30 fascinated spectators - in one of the region's long-gone but still exciting industrial spaces!

The former electrician and facility manager of the legendary paper mill, Matthias Fuhrer, talked about the glorious and at the same time tragic history of this remarkable place. With a production capacity of an incredible 250,000 tons of paper, the paper mill was a giant of its time! But after its shock closure in 2010, the main building now lies silent and abandoned, while the factory's water flow was once comparable to that of entire cities and their 50,000 inhabitants!

Industrial legacy and tragic fates

The stories about the glorious Schachenmayr factory, founded in 1768, shocked those present! This developed from a tobacco and grapp factory into an impressive cotton spinning mill, which in 1907 had over 1,000 employees and only grew to an inhumane 3,000 employees in the post-war period! The wool spinning mill was one of the largest and most important worsted spinning mills in all of Europe!

But the tour also brought dark chapters to light. Werner Staudenmayer reported on the Neuburger company and the fate of the Jewish cloth factory Borst. This was expropriated through forced Aryanization in 1938, but the family was able to return after the war! A historic comeback that only makes the sad background of this burgeoning industry even more poignant!

A new beginning in old splendor

The tour ended in the spectacular new town center, which was created from the former factory site - a glimmer of hope in the midst of industrial decay! The enthusiasm of the participants was consistently positive, and many found themselves charmingHasenheimtogether to discuss our experiences and reflect on the industry's faded glory days!

For anyone who wants to learn more about the history of this region, this is a shockingly beautiful opportunity! At the former Salach paper factory there are numerous tours that illuminate the region's shocking heritage, combining pears and grapes! The different tours vary from easy to medium levels of difficulty and allow participants to delve into the fascinating depths of industrial history. Who dares?
