Rottumhockete: Summer festival delights with music and culinary delights!

On the last Sunday of the Whitsun holidays, the traditional Rottumhockete of the hand harmonica club took place in Mietingen. The event followed immediately after the celebrated Corpus Christi procession, which attracted numerous believers and visitors in the middle of the village. Midsummer temperatures attracted both day trippers and cyclists, who took the opportunity to enjoy the festival in pleasant weather. The beer garden on the banks of the Rottum, which was built especially for the festival, offered guests the opportunity to linger under shady trees or parasols.

During the Rottumhockete, visitors were able to enjoy a variety of dishes. Stuffed Saumagen with spaetzle and salad as well as the legendary salad variation from the hand harmonica club were particularly popular. The classic bratwursts with potato salad and breaded schnitzel with fries were also very popular. Fresh drinks and coffee with cake rounded off the culinary offering, with many guests choosing to take the sweet treats with them.

Cultural connections through Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi, a central part of the Catholic calendar, is a festival celebrated in many regions, particularly Bavaria and Austria. It serves religious reflection and the expression of solidarity with the church and the community. The origins of the festival go back to the Belgian nun Juliana of Liège, whose visions led to the festival being instituted by Pope Urban IV. On this day the Body of the Lord is venerated in a solemn Eucharist.

The musical entertainment during the Rottumhockete was dominated by the senior orchestra of the Biberach Accordion Orchestra, which created the right atmosphere. The clubs, parishes, schools and kindergartens that wrote articles for the event contributed to the diversity and breadth of the performing cultures.

Tradition and community

In Bavaria and Austria, magnificent processions are an integral part of Corpus Christi celebrations, reflecting local traditions and cultural heritage. These include festive costumes and floral carpets that can be admired during the glorious pageants. Particularly noteworthy are the processions in Ruhpolding, Altötting, as well as the lake processions in Upper Austria, such as in Lake Hallstatt, which have a long tradition.

The Rottumhockete has not only a culinary but also a deeper cultural meaning. Visitors to the event benefit from the vibrant community and the diversity of regional customs that are reflected in the celebrations. The festival therefore remains an important date in the local event calendar and an occasion for people from Mietingen and the surrounding area to get together.
