Fatal accident in the Balmrain tunnel: woman (59) dies after collision

On Monday evening, June 9, 2025, a tragic traffic accident occurred in the Balmrain Tunnel near Eschenbach SG, which claimed the life of a 59-year-old driver. According to nau.ch, the accident happened shortly after 6:15 p.m. on the A15 motorway. The driver, who came from the canton of Glarus, lost control of her vehicle, which hit the right-hand tunnel wall and crossed the center line into oncoming traffic.

As a result, there was a collision with an oncoming car driven by a 38-year-old woman and another vehicle driven by a 28-year-old driver. Tragically, the 59-year-old woman succumbed to her serious injuries at the scene of the accident, despite attempts at resuscitation by emergency services. Injured people and rescue efforts

Two other people were injured in the accident. A four-year-old boy and the 28-year-old driver had to be taken to hospital with unspecified injuries. A large contingent of rescue workers was deployed, including several patrols from the St.Gallen cantonal police, four ambulances with emergency doctors, a medical operations manager, two Rega helicopters, a public prosecutor and the fire department.

During the rescue and recovery work, the A15 motorway was closed for several hours, which led to significant traffic delays. However, the extensive measures meant that the injured could be cared for quickly. Details about the accident indicate that the 59-year-old driver may have had an unfortunate mishap while driving from Rapperswil-Jona towards Reichenburg. The entire incident not only leaves the relatives of the deceased sad, but also shows the dangers of road traffic.
