Missing Artist: FGCU Mourns Professor Andy Owen!

Andy Owen, a notable professor of art at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), passed away on June 21, 2025 after a three-month battle with cancer. During his 17 years of teaching, he has taught drawing and printmaking to generations of students and has been instrumental in the formation of FGCU's permanent art collection. His passion for the arts and commitment to students made him a central figure in FGCU's arts community. This is reported by WGCU.

Owen was known for his innovative approaches and engaging teaching methodology. He emphasized the importance of the natural environment in his works, which were heavily inspired by the waters of Southwest Florida and the 10,000 Islands. The artist's more recent works have addressed contemporary issues such as Hurricane Irma's impact on the coastline and serious water quality challenges, including red tide and fish kills. An artist's work should be both beautiful and meaningful, and Owen powerfully embodied this by addressing the fragility of the ecosystem and the urgency of environmental awareness as presented by Lux Center.

Legacy and honors

Numerous awards and exhibitions regionally, nationally and internationally testify to Owen's talent and influence. FGCU's art department plans to honor his legacy with a student-led steamroller printing workshop, seen as a tribute to his innovative teaching style and commitment to the artistic community. Those who knew him describe him as a passionate teacher, a master of printing technology and a dedicated mentor who cared about his students.

Early in his career, Owen served as master printer at Littleton Studios in North Carolina, where he mastered the technique of vitreography. His influence extends not only to his teachings, but also to FGCU's permanent collection, which includes over 80 works from the Littleton Studios Collection. Owen received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Florida and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Arizona, both in Printmaking.

Andy Owen is survived by his wife Pinrat (Nuch) Owen, their dog Echo, his brother Paul Owen and his mother Renee Moreland.
