Farewell to Betty J. Owen: A Life for the Community in Pentress

Betty J. Owen, a distinguished Pentress resident, passed away at home on June 6, 2025, at the age of 87. Born July 28, 1937, in Core, Betty was the daughter of Dale Burdette and Olive Jean Myers Morris. Her notable accomplishments include co-founding the Owen Funeral Home, later renamed Owen Neely Funeral Home, along with her late husband, Charles Robert “Bob” Owen. The couple successfully ran the funeral home for more than 40 years.

In her personal life, Betty was known for her passion for tole painting. She leaves behind an estate that includes several nieces and nephews. Her husband Bob died after 59 years together. Her sister Bonnie J. Neely has also passed away.

Last wishes and condolences

Betty J. Owen had clear desires for her final resting place. Cremation services will be conducted in accordance with these wishes by Hastings Funeral Home in conjunction with Omega Crematory. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Blacksville Baptist Church, c/o Marsha Cottrell, 7693 Mason Dixon Highway, Wana, WV 26590. Mourners may leave online condolences at the Hastings Funeral Home website.

Arranging funerals can be emotionally stressful and financially challenging for many. Above all, the lack of transparency in the funeral industry makes many people vulnerable to possible deception. Therefore, it is important that funeral homes like Owen-Neely Funeral Home comply with the so-called “Funeral Rule,” which was established in 1984 to protect consumers. This rule requires funeral homes to provide clear and accurate information about their products and services.

Transparency in the funeral industry

Owen-Neely Funeral Home is required to provide pricing information upon request by telephone and to provide each visitor with a General Price List (GPL). This list includes various costs associated with funeral services, such as transportation and viewing fees. Anyone interested can request a free copy of the GPL, regardless of whether they want to use the funeral services or not.

Compliance with these regulations is of great importance to ensure that those grieving are not misled. Complaints about violations of the Funeral Rule can be directed to the Federal Trade Commission, which is another reason for funeral homes to operate transparently.

During these difficult times, our condolences go out to the family and friends of Betty J. Owen, who lived a rewarding life.
