Construction work on flood protection in Zizishausen: Important diversions!

Construction work on the first section of flood protection will begin in Zizishausen on September 17, 2025. This measure is part of a comprehensive project that aims to improve flood protection along the Neckar in Nürtingen, as the existing protection is not sufficient to statistically withstand flood events that occur every 100 years. Current dams do not provide sufficient security against flood risks, especially in the context of climate change.

The planned measures, which extend over a distance of almost 2.2 kilometers, were presented on January 9, 2025. This work, which is taking place in collaboration with the Stuttgart Regional Council, State Water Authority, also includes pruning and clearing work in the area of the flood protection dams on the Neckar. A special construction corridor will be created to upgrade the protective systems between the Hochwiesenstrasse bridge and the Zizishausen industrial area.

Impact on cyclists and pedestrians

Cyclists and pedestrians must be prepared for restrictions during construction work. The path in the Lower Island area is expected to be closed for a period of approximately seven months until April 30, 2026. This not only affects the pedestrian and cycle path along the Neckar in the Zizishausen industrial area, but also the connecting path between Metzstrasse and Stattmannstrasse.

Road users will be redirected from Inselstrasse via Stegweg to Furtwiesen onto Oberboihinger Strasse and Stattmannstrasse. It is to be expected that there may be short-term closures and disruptions during the work, which will be communicated in advance in order to avoid unnecessary burden on residents and commuters.

Environmental protection measures

In order to minimize the environmental impact during construction work, a tree expert is used to supervise construction. This serves to keep necessary interventions in the trees as low as possible. Existing trees within the construction site are affected and must be cut back or partially removed. Particular care is taken to expose the root areas of the trees to be preserved, trim them and cover them with a protective curtain to ensure their long-term preservation.

All of this is done in coordination with the responsible nature conservation authority and in cooperation with the city of Nürtingen. The measures are intended to ensure that the flood protection systems are not only functional but also environmentally friendly. The expansion of flood protection in Zizishausen is therefore an important step towards protecting the population and the infrastructure in the region.
