Redesign of the traffic area

Before the City Balcony was created, the area was a busy thoroughfare that saw up to 12,000 vehicles per day. The conversion began as a temporary experiment in 2021 and was finally made permanent at the end of 2022. Citizens actively participated in the process by providing their opinions and suggestions at information events such as: daily news highlights.

The redesign not only created a more pleasant place to stay, but also a strip for cyclists and e-scooter drivers to ensure peaceful coexistence with pedestrians. The new infrastructure also includes bicycle racks, a charging station for e-bikes and a repair station and shows how cities can respond successfully to changing mobility concepts.

Effective mobility transition

The mobility transition is not only aimed at doing away with cars, but also at promoting alternative means of transport. Cities and municipalities play a central role in this Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and Transport (BMDV) determines. This is where innovative projects such as the City Balcony come into play, which can serve as a role model for other cities.

The redesign of the city balcony not only led to a better quality of stay, but also to the revitalization of the adjacent restaurants. Owners invested in their properties, which further increased the attractiveness of the area. In an online vote, the city balcony received 1,527 out of 6,334 votes and thus also won the audience award, which underlines the broad acceptance and appreciation among the population.
