Ludwigsburg is planning BUGA 2043: opportunities and challenges in view!

The city of Ludwigsburg has taken a decisive step towards applying for the Federal Garden Show (Buga) 2043. On Wednesday, the local council voted unanimously to carry out a feasibility study. This study is intended to assess the opportunities, challenges, spatial and thematic priorities as well as the development potential and costs for the large garden project. The mayor of Ludwigsburg, Matthias Knecht, emphasized the importance of ideas and visions for the future. “We need to develop our city further and such projects are essential for this,” he explained. Stuttgart News reported.

The collaboration between Ludwigsburg, Stuttgart, Esslingen and the Stuttgart Region Association is intended to form a regional network to bring the Buga 2043 to the Neckar. This plant primarily consists of a sustainable transformation of the urban-industrial landscape in the Stuttgart region. The plan is for an integrative development of the city, open space and infrastructure with the aim of creating a climate-resilient, socially just and economically viable blue-green infrastructure, as shown on stuttgart.de is explained.

Public discussion and political feedback

Despite the approval of the CDU and FDP, which support the study, there are also critical voices. The SPD representative Margit Liepins expressed concerns about the financial resources for other city projects. The SPD, Left and AfD voted against the feasibility study. The costs of the study amount to around 66,000 euros per municipality, which means a total of 262,990 euros if all partners cooperate. The maximum contribution per partner is set at 65,747.50 euros.

The feasibility study will be called for tender in the coming weeks, while the results are expected by the end of 2026. The decisions regarding participation in Buga are ultimately made by the local councils, the Stuttgart Region Association and Buga GmbH. The last major garden show in the region took place in 1993, when the International Horticultural Exhibition (IGA) shaped the city of Stuttgart and offered an impressive park landscape to seven million visitors.

Future outlook for the Buga 2043

The Buga 2043 initiative aims to enhance the Neckar as a river, recreational and adventure landscape. This ambitious project could not only give the region an economic boost, but also enrich the lifestyle of the residents of Stuttgart, Esslingen and Ludwigsburg. The fading memories of the IGA 1993, whose legacy remains visible in the city in the form of the “Green U”, increase the anticipation of future developments and opportunities for the region.
