Leinfelden celebrates completion of the renovation: a new city center is being created!
The “Westlich Max Lang-Straße” renovation project in Leinfelden-Echterdingen, which began on July 16, 2002 with a local council resolution, was officially completed with the receipt of the billing notice on March 6, 2025. Over a period of more than two decades, around 26.6 million euros were raised for the measure out of a total volume of around 33.6 million euros. The aim of this extensive renovation was to develop new residential and commercial areas and to relocate the U5 light rail line.
The renovation area covers almost 23 hectares, with the scope being expanded in three stages. During these years, numerous central projects were realized, including the inauguration of the new terminus in October 2015. The development of the Schelmenäcker district began in 2016, and the official opening of Max-Lang-Straße took place in 2017.
Successful urban development
Particularly noteworthy is the active public relations work that took place throughout the entire project. Information events and town hall meetings ensured that citizens were involved in the development process. A total of 4,186,146 euros in funding flowed into the project, which contributed significantly to its successful implementation. In addition, three urban development competitions were held to ensure design quality.
The result of these measures can be seen in the creation of a total of 223 new apartments, around a third of which are socially connected and 20 percent are price-controlled. The buildings meet the KfW Efficiency House Standard 40+ and are equipped with sustainable measures such as photovoltaic systems and green roofs. Commercial upgrades also have a positive impact on the local economy, with properties sold to companies such as Euchner in 2016 and Froehlich in 2019.
Future plans for the town center
In conclusion, it can be said that the successful “Westlich Max Lang-Straße” project is not only considered a model of municipal urban development, but also provides new impulses for the future design of the town center of Leinfelden-Echterdingen. The renovation-related surplus of 1,189,758 euros and the repayment of 713,854 euros to the state also illustrate the financial efficiency of the measure and the sustainable use of public funds.
