Major fire in Freiburg-Hochdorf: 75 million euros in damage and investigations are ongoing!
In Freiburg-Hochdorf there was a devastating fire in an industrial area on the evening of October 1, 2025 around 9 p.m. The flames spread quickly and engulfed several adjacent buildings. Around 70 firefighters were deployed during the day and over 200 at night to bring the situation under control. After an impressive 20 hours, the extinguishing work ended at least on October 2, 2025 at 5:30 p.m.
The fire broke out in a warehouse on Bebelstrasse and spread through the roof structure to other buildings. An employee of a security company was slightly injured during the operations, but was quickly released from the hospital. According to the fire department, there was no danger to the population, but residents were warned to keep windows and doors closed due to the heavy smoke. In addition, ash precipitation could be possible in the area without posing an acute health risk.
Damage and effects
The cause of the fire is currently unclear and the public prosecutor's office and the criminal police have launched an investigation. Preliminary results are not expected until next week. The amount of damage is estimated at at least 50 million euros, with reports saying it could be as much as 75 million euros. A shared warehouse belonging to six affected companies, which is part of a building complex of around 60,000 square meters, burned down completely.
The Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) is now calling for quick and unbureaucratic help for the affected companies. Mayor Martin Horn described the fire as a historic catastrophe for the region and was informed by the fire department on site.
Development of the situation
Bebelstrasse, which was initially closed while the fire was extinguished, has now been reopened to traffic. While the fire brigade used excavators to support the extinguishing work, the area around the scene of the fire remains cordoned off. Eyewitnesses described the situation as impressive, with a visible column of smoke that could be seen from the highway. Peter Kraus, an affected employee, was informed via text message that he should not come to work for the time being.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is continuing, although police have not yet found any evidence of arson. The events of the last few days cast a shadow on the Freiburg-Hochdorf industrial area, whose clean-up work and reconstruction now urgently need to be addressed.
