Brass music festival in Sursee: 25,000 fans celebrate at the competition!
On the second weekend of the Lucerne Cantonal Music Festival, which reached its climax on June 22, 2025, the city of Sursee was transformed into a pulsating center of brass music. 120 music clubs took part in the event, which had the motto “Taktvou united”, including 86 adult clubs, 22 youth music groups and 12 wind ensembles, a total of 5,000 musicians. The two weekends of the festival, 14th/15th. and 21/22. June, offered an extensive program, including competition days, which were evaluated by a jury of national and international music experts. How Lucerne newspaper reported, the parade music took place along Centralstrasse, which the conductors precisely arranged in formations with an eye on the evaluation.
The competition days were characterized by a hot summer atmosphere, with temperatures reaching up to 29 degrees Celsius on Saturday, increasing the demand for shaded areas. While the experts evaluated the music on aspects such as marching discipline and overall impression, special performances such as the brass band Feldmusik Knutwil in the town hall ensured satisfied spectators. The band Pomawalzka, which performed at Martignyplatz, was also very popular with its wide repertoire.
Creative formations and community spirit
The community initiatives among the bands particularly stood out. Some, like the brass band Feldmusik Escholzmatt, decided to only take part in the concerts and not in the parade. Nevertheless, the mood among the participants, especially after the competitions, remained relaxed and celebratory. Singing performances and celebrating together contributed to the festivities.
The organizing committee, led by Mario Cozzio and his sister Alexandra, had been planning the festival for years with a team of over 50 people. The number of visitors by Sunday evening was estimated at up to 25,000. This number represents a significant economic stimulus for Sursee and the surrounding area, as in another report from unison is mentioned.
A celebration for the future
The entire event was accompanied by a focus on sustainability, as travel for musicians was made possible free of charge in the Passepartout tariff association. Visitors were also advised to use public transport, as the festival grounds and the parade music route are within walking distance of the train station. The logistical planning involved around 1,500 helpers and around half a million francs in sponsorship money.
Consequently, the entire spectacle is celebrated not only as a pinnacle of brass music, but also as a model for future events that combine cultural vitality and economic benefit.
