Cyclist in Filderstadt seriously injured in collision with car!
On Friday, October 11, 2025, there was a serious traffic accident in Filderstadt, in the Esslingen district, in which a 31-year-old cyclist was injured. At around 5:05 p.m. she collided with a Ford, whose 51-year-old driver came from the right and hit the cyclist. Despite the driver's efforts to react in time, the collision happened suddenly.
The cyclist suffered injuries of unknown extent and was immediately taken to hospital. The material damage to the two vehicles is estimated at around 3,300 euros. Unfortunately, such accidents are not uncommon, as the current statistics on bicycle accidents in Germany show.
Accident statistics and safety on the roads
According to a study by the Federal Statistical Office, a total of 441 cyclists died in traffic in 2024, which represents a decrease of 33 cases compared to the previous year. Nevertheless, this is an increase of 11.4 percent compared to 2014. What is worrying is that 70.7 percent of Bicycle accidents with personal injuries due to collisions with cars. Drivers are primarily to blame in 75.3 percent of these cases.
Older people are particularly affected by the dangers of road traffic: almost two thirds of cyclists who were fatally injured were 65 years of age or older. Among Pedelec riders, this proportion was as high as 68.8 percent. These statistics make it clear that cycling safety, especially for older people, needs to be improved.
The role of the Pedelec
The increasing use of Pedelecs, i.e. bicycles with electric motor support, makes the traffic situation even more complex. In 2024, 192 of the cyclists who had fatal accidents were Pedelec users. This represents almost five times more than ten years ago. The increase in Pedelec users has also led to an increase in associated accidents, indicating that there are urgently needed measures to improve road safety.
Despite the increasing number of traffic accidents involving cyclists, the total number of traffic fatalities fell by 18.3 percent in 2024. This is a bright spot compared to previous years, but also highlights the urgent need to focus on cyclist safety. A total of 92,882 cyclists were injured in accidents, with over two thirds of these accidents involving other road users, often cars, according to data from Destatis show.
The recent incidents in Filderstadt should serve as an alarm signal. In particular, accident statistics underscore the need to improve road safety for cyclists to avoid future tragedies.
