Sports day in Leonberg: fun and exercise for young talents with disabilities!
On June 10, 2025, the annual games and sports day took place at the Karl Georg Haldenwang School (KGHS) in Leonberg. The creative approach of replacing the usual national youth games with this event attracted around 190 students with intellectual disabilities who were able to try out a wide range of activities. The event was organized in collaboration with several schools, including the Marie Curie School, the Friedrich Schiller School, the Theodor Heuglin School and the Theodor Heuss School, and included children and young people aged 6 to 18, represented from primary school to vocational school. This information is confirmed by Stuttgarter Nachrichten.
The sports day took place on the grounds of SV Leonberg-Eltingen and provided a platform for the students to compete against each other in various disciplines. The respective competitions were held at different levels and offered participants the opportunity to demonstrate their sporting skills in areas such as long jump, long-distance running, sprinting and target throwing. There were also alternative activities such as egg runs, can throwing and chill lounge activities, which underlined the communal nature of the day.
Sporting challenges and awards
A special highlight of this day was the opportunity to acquire the German sports badge for people with disabilities. A total of 36 candidates were registered, including second grade students who had already successfully participated in the previous year. This structural offer is part of the KGHS sports program, which is spread over four hours per week in the educational plan and includes the use of the Ostertag-Realschule sports hall.
The organization of the event was in the hands of sports teacher Hannah Steinheber, who planned and coordinated the activities together with teachers and accompanying persons. Traditionally, the sports day ended with a relay race in which the fastest students competed against the teachers. This not only promoted the students' sporting ambitions, but also their team spirit.
The KGHS has placed its funding focus on intellectual development and is located on Ostertagstrasse. Their activities are not only supported internally by the teaching staff, but also through cooperation with local sports clubs such as SV Leonberg-Eltingen, which provides the area for various sports projects, which contributes to the integration and support of the students. According to KrzBB, the variety of offers for the participants is a central aspect in conveying the joy of exercise and social contacts to strengthen each other.
