Truck fire on A8 near Sindelfingen: 90,000 euros in damage and closures!
On Wednesday, June 4, 2025, the fire department was alerted at 6:15 p.m. to a fire on the A8, just before the Sindelfingen Forest rest area. An Iveco Daily Transporter loaded with Styrofoam had caught fire. The exact cause of the fire is still unknown. The 44-year-old driver was alerted to the fire by other road users and was able to steer his vehicle onto the hard shoulder before the flames got out of control. When the rescue workers arrived, the van was already fully ablaze, which made extinguishing work considerably more difficult.
A following Opel Corsa, driven by a 39-year-old driver, was damaged by flying burning parts, but remained drivable. Despite the fire, there were fortunately no injuries. Only one ambulance was used as a precaution. During the extinguishing work, the road leading to Munich was completely closed, which led to significant traffic disruptions.
Damage and measures
The fire and the subsequent extinguishing work caused total damage of around 90,000 euros. Two lanes were significantly damaged, as was an emergency call box and two elements of the distance barrier. The Herrenberg motorway maintenance department is currently busy with closure measures, clean-up work and assessing the lanes. The recovery of the small truck is ongoing and the hard shoulder and right lane remain closed until further notice.
This incident follows a similar event that occurred on Friday evening on the A8 near Heimsheim in the Enzkreis. The tire of a car transporter burst, which led to flying sparks and a subsequent fire. Here too, the driver was uninjured, but the fire spread to three of the four loaded vehicles, including an electric car. The property damage is estimated at around 90,000 euros, and there was a traffic jam of up to four kilometers long while the fire brigade was on duty.
The current measures to contain the consequences of the fire and to ensure road safety are underway. Firefighters from Sindelfingen and Leonberg were on site with strong units without anyone being injured. The events illustrate the dangers that can arise in road traffic due to technical defects and the quick response of the rescue services.
