Anniversary celebration in Weil der Stadt: 950 years full of life and history!

On June 28th and 29th, 2025, Weil der Stadt will celebrate a big anniversary: ​​950 years since it was first mentioned in documents in 1075. The city events will take place in the core city and begin with an official opening on Saturday at 11 a.m. on the market square stage. Mayor Christian Walter will tap the keg at which free beer will be served. Stuttgarter Nachrichten reports on the participation of the civil guard, the fanfare procession, the local history association and the Twin town Riquewihr.

The ceremony is accompanied by a varied program. Apart from the live music, there is a fool's village, a flea market and a children's program with over 45 stalls as well as performances by clubs, traders and restaurateurs in the old town. Two stages provide musical entertainment: the Marktplatzbühne and the Viehmarktplatz with numerous concerts. A flea market will be offered on Stuttgarter Straße on both days, while the AHA fool's guild will set up a fool's village in Spittl.

Special highlights of the celebrations

One of the special highlights will be the display of a commemorative coin on Saturday at 11 a.m., during which an impressive 500 kg drop hammer will be used. With a size of three meters and a historical use from the 14th to 16th centuries, the hammer is used to mint small works of art made of silver or tin. The impact pressure is between 30 and 50 tons. The commemorative thaler shows a silhouette with buildings from the anniversary towns on the front, while the back shows the coat of arms. Weil der Stadt has announced several versions of the anniversary medal.

The medal is offered in a variety of designs, including brass, copper, pewter and limited edition fine silver and gold. Buyers can purchase the medal on site or pre-order it for the festival. The price for the fine silver commemorative coin is 49 euros, while the gold version is available from 616 euros. Stuttgarter Nachrichten points out that the medals can also be purchased directly via the online shop or the city and Tourist information can be pre-ordered.

Additional events and offers

The anniversary weekend will also be accompanied by numerous city tours and lectures. Historical city tours begin on Saturday at 12 p.m. and continue on Sunday at 1:15 p.m. The local history museum offers guided tours of the Hirsau form every hour, and the historic tower room in the Church of St. Peter and Paul is open for visits from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

City archivist Mathias Graner will offer lectures about the Hirsau form and life in the 11th century. A special bus line will be set up for the journey, which will run between Weil der Stadt and the suburbs from 3:55 p.m. There is also a Black Forest Association anniversary route with viewpoints around Weil der Stadt. Weil der Stadt is also planning further festival weekends in Münklingen (July 12th and 13th), Merklingen (July 18th and 19th) and Hausen (October 4th).
