Fire in the Schönbuch Tunnel: Fire brigade saves truck driver from worse!
On Wednesday morning, June 18, 2025, the Herrenberg fire department was called to a fire alarm in the Schönbuch tunnel on the A 81 at 5:45 a.m. The operational keyword was “truck fire” in the direction of Stuttgart and quickly attracted other fire departments from the Böblingen district into action. Gäubote reports that when the emergency services arrived, smoke was already noticed on a truck that was fortunately already parked outside the tunnel. The truck driver had successfully uncoupled the tractor, which prevented anything worse from happening.
The emergency services were able to quickly assess the situation and formally downgrade the incident. Firefighters used compressed fans to cool the affected area, while police closed the tunnel for a short time. The right lane in the direction of Singen was also closed in order to carry out cooling measures. Thanks to the quick reaction, a major deployment was not necessary and the numerous advancing forces were soon able to withdraw again.
Emergency forces and coordination
The Herrenberg fire department was on duty with a strong team. Such a contingent was necessary to ensure the safety of road users and to guarantee efficient firefighting. Herrenberg Fire Department most recently documented a similar operation on June 3, 2022, when the fire alarm system in the Schönbuch Tunnel reported a fire incident. When this alarm occurred, 22 emergency services from various departments, including Herrenberg and Gültstein, were on duty for over an hour.
A total of various vehicles were used at the time, including command cars, command vehicles and several fire-fighting assistance vehicles in order to be able to act as quickly as possible. The experience from such operations has improved the fire department's operational readiness and optimized coordination in such incidents.
In summary, the rapid and professional response of the fire brigades on Wednesday morning was able to efficiently defuse a potentially dangerous incident. The interaction between the various units underlines the important role of the fire department in fighting fires and ensuring traffic safety on the highways.
