The cultural scene in Perlesreut is experiencing an unprecedented spectacle! On August 11th, 2025, the cultural and passion play association celebrated a breathtaking anniversary: sensational 20 years full of passion, drama and unforgettable memories! Over 25,000 visitors flocked to the six epic productions, which captured the hearts of everyone in attendance. On both days, the festival area below the school became a vibrant place of living stories, while a fascinating exhibition with original sets, magical costumes and eerie props intoxicated the senses.
As Muw-Nachrichten reports, stories and anecdotes that touched even the coldest hearts were brought to life on display boards and during guided tours. A glittering ceremony took place on Saturday evening, which was accompanied by music and gave the long-time participants a well-deserved round of applause. There were two captivating memorabilia to admire: a gripping radio play CD with 27 passion songs and newly recorded spoken texts as well as an almost 100-page songbook that took the audience on a captivating journey through the history of the passion play.
A veil of change
But that's not all: at this glorious celebration, a dramatic change in leadership marks the end of an era! Alexander Muthmann, who is stepping down as chairman after 13 years and four glorious seasons, is appointed honorary chairman! In his place, Gerhard Poschinger, the previous deputy and mayor, takes on a new, bright leadership claim. The next Passion is already planned for the summer of 2027 – a real challenge for the new chairman!
The Passion Play in Perlesreut was an overwhelming success! ThePassion Play website reports a shockingly high visitor response: an impressive 1,700 visitors came to the first weekend despite miserable weather conditions, while the second performance attracted over 3,000 guests and even resulted in four sold-out performances! The feedback was consistently positive - a true testament to the impressive performance of the volunteers, who tirelessly provided organization and culinary delights.
The legacy of the passion play
As soon as we talk about the ancient traditions, it is impossible to ignore the magnificent Passion Play in Oberammergau - a true monument of culture that attracts visitors from all over the world. These games, which take place every ten years and are constantly in the spotlight, have a harrowing history riddled with anti-Semitism, sexism and racism. With the dramatic change in social attitudes and the courageous modernizations directed by Christian Stückl, the games have finally taken the step into the present!
