Traffic revolution in Uri: WOV brings new rules for Altdorf and Schattdorf!
With the commissioning of the West-East connection road (WOV) between Altdorf and Schattdorf on August 26, 2025, a new chapter in the transport history of the canton of Uri was opened. The WOV, which was completed after a three-year construction period, aims to reduce through traffic and increase the quality of stay in the town centers, which is supported by accompanying measures (FlaMa). These changes were decided by the Uri district administrator and are to be implemented at the same time as the opening of the WOV in Altdorf and Schattdorf.
The WOV is shifting traffic from Altdorf to a bypass road. This not only creates space for traffic-calmed zones and 30 km/h speed limits, but also helps to enforce the ban on the passage of trucks in the village center of Altdorf, which only provides exceptions for delivery traffic. Planned adjustments also affect Schattdorf and Bürglen, so that the new measures should have a comprehensive effect.
Traffic management and regulations
Road users in Altdorf and Schattdorf have to get used to new traffic routing in 30 zones and meeting areas. In the meeting zone that was set up in Altdorf, pedestrians are allowed to cross the street anywhere, but must be careful not to unnecessarily obstruct vehicle traffic. Vehicles are obliged to give way to pedestrians. The junction of vehicles into Tellsgasse also has specific right-of-way rules that are intended to ensure clarity.
The Uri police have provided four concrete examples to explain the new traffic rules. In 30 km/h zones, vehicles have priority over pedestrians and vehicle-like devices. Special attention is also paid to the intersection near the police station in Altdorf, where red vehicles have priority over purple vehicles, but not over black vehicles.
Accompanying measures and traffic calming
The accompanying measures in Altdorf include the introduction of a meeting zone with a speed limit of 20 km/h in the center and upstream 30 km/h zones. These measures are to be implemented by the end of September 2025. Driving bans for heavy traffic and improvements for bicycle traffic are planned for Schattdorf. It is particularly important to create a core lane for bicycles in order to promote cycling. Construction around the new roundabout in Schattdorf is currently still underway.
The integration of such measures, including those such as meeting zones, is crucial for increasing the quality of stay and promoting sustainable transport options. Traffic calming tools described in the literature also include pedestrian zones, residential streets and cycle streets that are optimally designed to make traffic safer and more comfortable.
Comprehensive traffic monitoring will be used to evaluate the long-term effects of the new traffic routing and make adjustments if necessary. The Federal Roads Office (FEDRO) is also planning and financing the A2 Altdorf Süd half-connection, although its implementation has been delayed due to necessary revisions.
Overall, the new regulations and the WOV represent a significant step towards a modern transport infrastructure that not only meets the needs of road users, but also increases the quality of life in the towns.
