Porsche is breaking new ground: Boxster and Cayman now electric!
Porsche is on the threshold of a significant transformation: The Stuttgart-based automobile manufacturer plans to bring the Boxster and Cayman models into the electric age. This decision represents a crucial step in the company's strategy, which takes into account both the demand for electric vehicles and its loyal customer base. The new 718s will be available in both electric and petrol versions in the future, with the basic versions being electrically powered. High-performance variants such as RS, GTS and GT4, however, retain the proven six-cylinder boxer engine.
Porsche wants to preserve the sound and driving experience of traditional combustion engines, which is of central importance to the company's fans. However, it also becomes clear that the decision to offer both types of drive is not only a question of the market, but also a question of costs. Developing a platform for purely electric vehicles would be an expensive affair given the current low demand. Porsche remains flexible and wants to actively respond to its customers' preferences, as auto-illustrierte.ch reports.
Electromobility in the sports car segment
The 718 Cayman and Boxster are Porsche's entry-level sports cars that stabilized the company financially almost three decades ago. In order to compete in the market, the next generation of these models will undergo a comprehensive electrical transformation. At this point, the first spy photos of test vehicles have already attracted attention, suggesting that the new electric models will retain a style and design similar to the current versions with combustion engines.
The electric 718 models are expected to use the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture, which will also be used in the upcoming electric Macan. This platform enables, among other things, an 800-volt battery system, a maximum charging speed of 270 kW and a dual-motor all-wheel drive with up to 630 hp and 1,130 Nm of torque. However, official details on performance, battery capacity or charging speeds for the new 718 EVs are still pending, as insideevs.com notes.
Prices and availability
Prices currently start at $68,300 for the gas-powered 718 Cayman and $70,400 for the 718 Boxster. The new electric versions are expected to be more expensive. These models were originally scheduled to debut in 2025, but were pushed back until after the electric Cayenne and are now expected in 2026. Initial tests have already shown that the charging port is located at the rear and the interior will be equipped with at least two screens, which underlines the technical equipment of the vehicles.
Production of the new electric vehicles will take place at Porsche's main factory in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, an important location for the automotive industry. Even though the focus is clearly on electromobility, Porsche remains true to its tradition when it comes to vehicle development and customer experience.
