Christmas magic in Wangen: Experience the Advent tour!

Wangen im Allgäu has been preparing for the upcoming Advent season in the last few days. The festively decorated old town becomes the setting for a series of Christmas events and guided tours. Particularly noteworthy is the “Christmas Time in Wangen” tour, which is organized by the guest office. The tour takes place on three dates in December and offers participants a deep insight into old and new Christmas traditions.

The tour, led by Ms. Gabriele Neher, takes you through the streets of Wangen. Participants can look forward to topics such as the history of the nativity scene, the tradition of Klausen singing and the origin of the Advent wreath. The meaning of the Advent calendar and the Christmas tree as a symbol of the Christmas season are also discussed. The tour lasts approximately 90 minutes and costs 9 euros per person. Tickets are available at the Wangen guest office or online.

Christmas markets and festive events

Parallel to the tours, the city is making the Advent season lively with its Christmas village. Large Christmas trees were put up on the market square by the building yard, which underline the festive flair. The Christmas village at the Eselmühle will open on Friday, November 21st. From Friday to Sunday, visitors can visit various stalls offering handicraft products, Christmas decorations and regional delicacies.

The Christmas markets begin on the first Saturday of Advent, November 29th, and run until December 20th. On Advent Saturdays, guests can look forward to musical groups, including performances by guests from the twin town of Prato. A special highlight is the visit of Santa Claus, which takes place on December 6th and includes presents for the children.

Regional traditions and their meaning

During Advent in Germany people not only celebrate, but also reflect on the upcoming Christmas. The period is marked by established customs and traditions that are often deeply rooted in regional culture. One of the best-known traditions, the Advent wreath, has its origins in Northern Germany in the 19th century and is an important part of the pre-Christmas decoration. Every candle that is lit symbolizes an Advent Sunday and brings light into the dark season.

St. Nicholas Day, celebrated on December 6th, is another tradition held throughout Germany with regional differences. Here in Wangen the children enjoy the visit of Santa Claus, while in other regions cleaning boots is part of the custom. These customs, as well as midnight singing in churches and the diverse Christmas markets, show the cultural diversity and richness of the Advent season in Germany.

With a variety of events that combine both tradition and modern elements, Wangen offers an unforgettable experience in the run-up to Christmas. From contemplative tours to lively Christmas markets to communal celebrations, the city has something to offer for everyone.
