Welcome to Wangen: Student exchange with South Africa!

The Rupert-Ness-Gymnasium (RNG) in Wangen continues his long-term tradition of the student exchange with the German International School in Johannesburg. This exchange has been taking place since 2008, which was also founded by the 2006 World Cup, while the Wangen was launched as a host city for Togo's national team. At that time, Prime Minister Günther Oettinger stimulated the partnership, which was realized a year later. This year the Wangen students can look forward to visiting their South African exchange partners in July Wangen .

The group from Johannesburg was welcomed by Mayor Michael Lang on the second day of her stay in the Wangen town hall. During the greeting, Lang recalled his own visit to Johannesburg seven years ago and expressed his thanks to the teachers who support this exchange program. He wished the students an eventful time with diverse activities.

an exchange with obstacles

In the past two school years, the exchange was interrupted due to the Covid 19 pandemic. The Rupert-Ness-Gymnasium reacted creatively and converted the concept into a virtual exchange. Students in grade 9 took part and started the exchange with introductory videos and online conferences. For example, word clouds were created in order to visually present ideas about life in Wangen and Johannesburg

The South African students were warmly welcomed by their German exchange partners at Wangen station. The planned return visit should take place in October to give the Wangen students the opportunity to explore Johannesburg and get to know their partner school. The application modalities for the exchange will be announced before the autumn holidays in the coming school year.
