Dramatic house fire in Wangen: Fire brigade saves children from flames!
This morning a house fire broke out on Siebenbürgenstrasse in Wangen im Allgäu and promptly required the fire department to be called in. The fire department was alerted around 9:30 a.m. when visible smoke could be seen over the settlement. When they arrived, emergency services found flames and heavy smoke on the first floor of a semi-detached house.
A dramatic element of the events was the discovery of two small children in the heavily smoke-filled attic, who were rescued by two brave neighborhood carpenters. These heroic rescuers helped the children while the fire department extinguished the fire from inside and outside using a turntable ladder. Similar reports confirm that when the fire brigade arrived, a room was fully ablaze and dark smoke was pouring out of the kitchen window, indicating the origin of the fire: the kitchen of the semi-detached house.
Fire brigade and rescue workers in action
A total of around 60 firefighters from Wangen, Deuchelried and Niederwangen were on duty, supported by the German Red Cross (DRK) and the ambulance service (KAP). The fire brigade was able to prevent the flames from spreading to the roof structure and the other half of the house by setting the bar. After around 20 minutes the fire was under control and extinguished.
While the firefighters fought the fire, the small children and their mother were treated by emergency services and taken to hospital as a precaution. Both the lifesavers and a resident were taken to clinics for examination, but no other people were found in the building while the fire was being extinguished.
Consequences of the fire and investigations
The apartment in question provides urban accommodation for a mother and her six children, while a married couple lives on the ground floor. The ground floor was slightly damaged, while the upper floor was classified as severely affected. The furniture and clothing in the upstairs apartment was badly damaged; Charred residue was removed from the building. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it is believed that the fire started during cooking. The amount of damage is estimated at a low six-figure euro amount.
Police have begun an investigation into the cause of the fire and the scene was reopened around 11:30 a.m. The fire brigade commander praised the courage of the lifesavers and was proud of the efforts of his crew, who were able to act quickly and efficiently in such a critical situation.
For the firefighters and lifesavers, it was another impressive mission in an otherwise quiet community. Such incidents repeatedly underline the importance of quick action and courage in crisis situations.
