60 years of happiness: Wangen celebrates Lydia and Karl's marriage anniversary
Over 60 years ago, in a train compartment between Innsbruck and Bregenz, fate began when Lydia and Karl Werk met. The birth years of the two couldn't be more different: Lydia, born in 1940 in Innsbruck, and Karl, 1938 in Eybach/Geislingen. Their love found its official setting in 1965 when they married in a civil ceremony in Wangen and later in church in Reuthe/Bezau. Her honeymoon took her to Rome in a VW Beetle to be greeted by Pope Paul VI. to be blessed and enter into a union that, as Pope Leo XIV would later emphasize, represents a sign of love for the world.
Together, Lydia and Karl raised three children and four grandchildren. Despite her initial homesickness when she moved to Wangen im Allgäu, Lydia found her place. Karl developed a passion for skiing, which took him to the mountains of Vorarlberg and South Tyrol. Even after a serious skiing accident, at the age of 87, he remains active in sports, especially on his Pedelec.
Commitment and challenges
Karl worked professionally for Deutsche Post for 46 years and also made an important contribution as co-organizer of the “Upper Swabian Baroque Road”, where he led many bike tours. Lydia, on the other hand, was a trained seamstress and found joy in painting by creating colorful pictures. Her commitment spanned 17 years of volunteer work at the St. Vinzenz senior center in Wangen, where she particularly cared for people suffering from dementia.
The couple plans to celebrate their diamond wedding with their family on June 4, 2025. A year earlier, Pope Leo XIV emphasized the importance of marriage between a man and a woman in front of around 45,000 people in St. Peter's Square. In his address, he reminded the families of their mission for peace, unity and the transmission of the faith. The pope explained that the world needs the bond of marriage to recognize the love of God and overcome social decay, a message very close to the values of Lydia and Karl Werk.
The pope encouraged married couples to act as role models for their children and to work toward freedom through obedience. These topics are still relevant and are reflected in the wishes of Lydia and Karl, who have been able to overcome harmonies and challenges together over many years. Their life together is not only a testimony to their love, but also an example of the values that Pope Leo XIV proclaimed in his address.
