Heat horror at Stuttgart schools: Parents demand immediate action!
The ongoing heat wave is causing more and more worried voices in Stuttgart. High temperatures have become an urgent problem, particularly in schools, endangering the health of students. Nils Schanz, father of two students at the Marienschule in Stuttgart-Süd, expressed his concerns about the unbearable conditions in the classrooms in an email to Mayor Frank Nopper. That reports gea.de.
The principal of the Marienschule, Nadine Reinhardt, confirms that the problem exists particularly in four classrooms on Hauptstätter Straße. Windows must not be opened due to the high level of fine dust pollution, which increases the heat build-up in the rooms. The exact temperatures in the classrooms are preceded by an analysis by the city administration, which has commissioned temperature measurements.
Urgent need for action
The students suffer from health problems such as headaches and often have to be picked up by their parents. To make the extreme temperatures more bearable, some students use wet towels or cool their feet in buckets of water. Lessons sometimes take place in the shady backyard or in the cafeteria. Schanz and his wife bought a mobile air conditioner and water bottles out of their own pockets to support their children. However, the city has made it clear that mobile air conditioning units can only be used when temperatures repeatedly exceed 35 degrees.
School Mayor Isabel Fezer emphasizes the challenges that exist with historic buildings. In order to reconcile monument protection and the well-being of children, long-term structural measures are necessary. Although some windows are already equipped with reflective film, the question of a comprehensive concept for improving the climatic conditions in schools remains open.
Appeal for more support
The president of the social association VdK, Verena Bentele, points out that many facilities are not adequately prepared for extreme heat. The Education and Science Union is also calling for free drinking water in schools, while the number of sick days due to the effects of heat has increased, especially among men who work physically. The challenges may require long-term solutions to optimally protect students and those in need of care.
