Ulm loses the highest church tower: Sagrada Família trumps it!

Ulm Minster will hold the record for the tallest church tower in the world until 2026, but that title will soon pass to the Sagrada Família in Barcelona. When completed, the Catholic church, which has been under construction since 1882, will tower over Ulm Minster by 10.5 meters and reach a total height of 172 meters. This is announced by Schwäbische.de.

The Sagrada Família will receive the impressive “Tower of Jesus Christ”, which will be equipped with a walk-in glass cross. This bespoke cross, which measures an impressive 17 meters high and 13 meters wide, will be integrated into the structure with a total weight of 50 tonnes. The manufacturer responsible for production, Joseph Gartner GmbH from Gundelfingen, initially only received a planning order, but this was later expanded to include the entire design.

The glass cross and the technology

The construction of the glass cross consists of a stainless steel skeleton that is filled with concrete and covered with ceramic. Glazing ensures a modern look and flooding with light. A first sample of the design was exhibited and tested in Gundelfingen in August - with consistently positive feedback. From mid-September, this model construction will be presented in the courtyard of the Sagrada Família, which will further fuel interest in the building, as SWR.de reports.

The completion of the Sagrada Família is dedicated to the vision of its original architect Antoni Gaudí, whose 100th death anniversary will also be celebrated in 2026. It is particularly worth mentioning that the Liebherr company from Biberach will be involved in the final phase of the construction project with its cranes.

A lasting legacy for Ulm

Despite the imminent loss of the record title for the tallest church tower, the Ulm Minster will remain a record. It is a sign of how important this building is for the region and the history of construction. In addition, the international collaboration taking place at the Sagrada Família shows how Baden-Württemberg has an important place in the construction industry, not only on a national but also on an international level.
