Mill Day in Mühlhausen: Tradition and enjoyment attract thousands!

On Whit Monday, June 10, 2025, several mill days took place in Germany, which attracted a large number of visitors and put the ancient craft in the spotlight. The event opened its doors in Mühlhausen, a small town in Baden-Württemberg, and not only presented mill technology, but also a lot of traditions that were worth seeing and experiencing.

The Mill Day event in Mühlhausen attracted hundreds of visitors who were able to visit the oil mill and the neighboring blacksmith shop. Chairman Sebastian Kopp emphasized the importance of these experiences and the management team's commitment to introducing visitors to the art of grinding and forging. Helpers were available to answer questions and explain the grinding process. These interactive elements were particularly popular with the youngest visitors.

Popular food offerings and atmosphere

The food on offer was in great demand, with the bratwursts and fresh rolls from the local butcher Moser being particularly noteworthy. The high number of visitors resulted in full seats, especially in the coffee and cake area. The organizers planned to keep the mill festival small but elegant in order to create a personal atmosphere and at the same time put the proceeds from the event into helping fire victims who had been made homeless by an accident.

At the same time, another mill day took place in Ammerland. Swen Abrahams and his family went on a bicycle tour to several mills, including the Galerieholländer in Querenstede, which at 222 years old is the oldest mill in the district. This mill houses the highest pigsty in Ammerland and attracts the attention of historians and interested parties alike. The chairman of the Querenstede Mill Association, Wilfried Fischer, explained the history of this special mill and guided the visitors through the facility.

A varied program

The mills in Ammerland are not only architectural sights, but also places of living history. Nine mills have been preserved in Ammerland and can be visited. Certain grinding processes are demonstrated without turning on the windmill to introduce visitors to the traditional methods of grinding. A supporting program that included a hobby and art market as well as a vintage car show provided additional entertainment. The watermill in Ocholt-Howiek also offered a varied program and received positive feedback from guests.

Mill Day began in High and Low German with a service held by Pastor Henning Menke. Frauke Rosendahl, chairwoman of the Ocholt-Howiek local history association, expressed her satisfaction with the great interest from visitors and the positive response to the event.

In summary, the Mill Days in Mühlhausen and Ammerland show the diversity and value of old crafts and connect generations through history, tradition and community.
