Major fire in Stuttgart underground car park: Fire brigade saves residents on Father's Day!

On the evening of Ascension Day, which this year falls on June 1, 2025, the Stuttgart fire department was called to an operation on Wolframstrasse in Stuttgart-Nord. Several callers reported heavy smoke coming from the underground car park of an apartment building. The Stuttgart Integrated Control Center reacted quickly and sent a large contingent of forces to the scene. Most of the residents had already left the house and were safely waiting outside the building.

When the first crew wearing respiratory protection arrived, they discovered that the fire had started in a car. The fire was immediately extinguished with a small extinguisher, but the smoke had already completely engulfed the underground car park. In order to deal with the situation, a fire support vehicle with a high-performance fan was requested. The fire department was able to ventilate the underground car park efficiently, which meant that residents were able to return to their apartments as all stairwells were smoke-free.

Mission details and challenges

The prevailing conditions in the underground car park proved to be challenging. Two respiratory protection teams carefully worked their way into the basement, which offered almost no visibility due to the heavy smoke. The fire was brought under control with the sprinkler system installed. In order to achieve this, additional respiratory protection teams were also deployed to extinguish the fire on the burning Audi and to check the underground car park.

In order to efficiently push the fire smoke out of the underground car park, a large, remote-controlled fan on a tracked chassis from the Stuttgart fire department was used. In addition, a tracked vehicle from the Porsche fire department was used to remove the burning vehicle from the underground car park. The fire department was on duty with around 80 members of the professional and volunteer fire department until around 1:30 p.m. All residents were able to safely return to their homes around 11 a.m.

Fortunately, there were no injuries reported. Nevertheless, the operational measures prevented significant damage and the professional response of the Stuttgart fire department protected the residents in the area from worse consequences. Parallel to this operation, other units of the volunteer fire department occupied fire station 1 in order to be prepared for further operations in the urban area.

The details of this operation and the forces involved were picked up by various media. That's what she reports Swabian newspaper, while specific information about the deployment strategy from the Homepage of the Stuttgart fire department were provided.
